Wii Nintendo - For The Gen X

Home video games have been a passion with the entire generations now. The perfect pastimes, these seemed to have started a new craze amongst all the age categories, cutting across boundaries. This has been well tapped by various entrants into the field of home video games and nintendo is one of them. nintendo released its fifth home video game console by the name of Wii. This one is regarded to be part of the seventh generation of video games, along with Sony's PlayStation and Microsoft's xbox 360. It was unveiled in the E3 Press Conference in 2005, and by end of 2006 it got launched in the four key markets of the market.

The one feature that distinguishes the Wii from the rest is its Wii remote, which is a wireless controller. The console is connected with the controller wirelessly through Bluetooth. This Wii remote can also connect to other devices through a proprietary port that is placed at the base of the controller. The Nunchuk unit in the retail pack features an accelerometer and the standard analog stick with trigger buttons. To prevent unintentional dropping of the Wii remote, an attachable wrist band is provided.

This handheld device detects acceleration in 3-dimensions, and is capable of receiving updates and messages from the internet in the standby mode. The gaming unit is one of the smallest and the lightest by the manufacturer until now. The operating system interface in the nintendo Wii has the same concept as that of television channels. The arrangement of the channels can be changed by holding down the A and B buttons. The 6 primary channels in the Wii include Photo Channel, Mii Channel, Wii shop Channel, Forecast Channel, the disc Channel and news Channel.

According to a nintendo spokesperson, the company plans to release a new version of the console with dvd-video playback capabilities in the year 2007.

Nintendo Wii Console Review

Recognized for its sleek design and unique controller, the Nintedo Wii marks Nintendo's return to power in the home console market. One of the most attractive aspects of this system (other than its minute size) is its price tag. While affordability seems to be a lost concept among next-generation consoles, the Wii clocks in at a reasonable $280.

The Most innovative part of the new nintendo is the Wiimote controller. The controller is motion sensitive, allowing users to play games a whole new way and giving players a more "in game" feel. While some games manage to do this in a surprisingly fluid way, other games feel awkward and fail to registers some motions. The new controllers will give future game designers more creative freedom and there is hope that later games for the Wii will make better use of its functionalities. Of course, the new controller does not come without problems. There have been numerous reports of wayward controllers refusing to stay in gamers' hands and breaking television screens. As far as graphics go, the Wii falls short. The graphics of the Wii are not at all next-gen, and are in fact the exact same as those of the gamecube.

For the casual gamer the Wii is a good fit--the low price tag makes casual gaming affordable and the controller lets casual gamers compete with full time gamers. The virtual arcade allows for the play of original nintendo games, which has great nostalgic value. The Wii is fun to fool around with, but more serious gamers may want to move up to the graphic powerhouses by grabbing a Sony playstation 3 or an xbox 360. The limited selection of games may leave Wii users feeling left out. Still, the Wii is innovative, fun to play, and shows hope for the future.
